Oahu Golf Courses

For the avid player or spectator, Oahu offers more golf courses than any of the other Hawaiian Islands. Over forty courses, both public and private, share a few things in common, like gorgeous views of the natural scenery, carefully designed and maintained greens, and the occasional professional golf celebrity come to enjoy the world-class courses of Oahu.

If you enjoy observing the pro events, visit in the beginning in the year, when PGA Tours Championship events take place. January and February are the hot golf competition months.

Golf in Oahu For Every Budget

There are several options for every size of budget, so don't expect to always spend exorbitant amounts of money in order to pay a quality game of golf. You can find affordable prices at the municipal course and still be surprised by the challenge of the links and the spectacular views that surround you. One of the busiest courses is Ala Wai Golf Course in Waikiki, where over 500 rounds of golf are played each day. Despite the relatively flat landscape this is a challenging course and some of the holes offer a tricky shot for even the champion players.

Playing in style is another option on the island, at one of the exclusive clubs operating on a private basis. Moanalua Golf Club is a favorite and is one of the first golf courses built on the island (in 1898). On the west coast of Oahu you can find some of the premier designer courses, like the Ko Olina course crafted by architect Ted Robinson. Built on the former sugar plantation of the Ewa plain, the Hawaii Prince Gold course was planned out by a legendary master team; Ed Seay and Arnold Palmer. With 27 holes and three nines this course features rolling hills of emerald grass and receptively cupped greens. In Ewa you can also find one of the newest courses on the island, Coral Creek. 6,870 years stretch out to include the natural coral rock formations that jut into the air like ragged cliffs. Finally, the fabulous Makaha Resort club will really push even the most experienced player, so be prepared to use almost every club in your bag!

Golf on Oahu's Eastern Shore

A trip to the island's Eastern Shore is another golf adventure, including both the 18-hole Luana Hills Country Club in the valley between Kailua and Waimanalo and the Koolau Golf Club nestled in the tropical rainforest, considered one of the toughest courses in the US. Koolau is so challenging most likely due to the windy climate and the deep valleys that cut into the terrain of the course. The dramatic landscape is used effectively here to enhance your game while providing breathtaking panoramas.

Turtle Bay Golf

In the north you might be tricked into thinking you were suddenly transported to the highlands of Scotland when you visit Turtle Bay Resort club for a game on the only 36-hole course on Oahu. This course, designed by the famous Arnold Palmer, is reminiscent of the Scottish landscape with deeply green plains of grass, gusty winds that tug and swirl, the tantalizingly salty sea air and of course, sand. Some of the top players come here to play in the well-attended PGA tour events.
